Summer Theme

Picture this: you’re watching the season finale of your favorite television show while simultaneously growing ever more anxious as the clock ticks closer and closer to the end of the hour. “Oh no!” you think to yourself, “Not a two-parter!” And then, it happens: the screen goes black and the dreaded words appear: To Be Continued… There’s nothing to do now but wait what seems like an endless amount of time before the resolution is revealed.

It’s frustrating not knowing what’s going to happen, isn’t it? T.V. producers have mastered the craft of suspense and deliberately build the excitement and anticipation, finding the perfect moment to stop and make you wait. And how much greater is that frustration when the unknown is the path our lives will take and not just a t.v. show? Our schooling leads us to the months before graduation and then…we have to wait. Our employment at the company has pointed us in the direction of an upward movement, but talk begins of a merger and then…we have to wait. Parents have given permission to buy that new gaming system, but are only going to cover half. You have to work…and wait.

When we look forward to the future, we also often reflect on the past. SonRise celebrates its 50th year of ministry this season, and that’s a rich history of blessings! Yet even with that history of blessings, it can become frightening to look forward. Where will today’s economy take camp? Will today’s technology-oriented youth even be interested in spending a week away from cell phones, televisions, and the internet? It’s frustrating to not know what’s going to happen, isn’t it?

And yet, as each of us looks back we see the constant guiding hand of our Savior, providing when we have need and leading when the way is hard to see. Looking ahead, we see that this love, grace, and guidance is to be continued for the rest of our time on earth. Unlike that t.v. show where writers can change the ending and we might never know what will happen, in Christ we can look forward in our life and know exactly where it leads – our heavenly home.

2010’s summer theme is To Be Continued… based on Hebrews 13:8: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” In our Bible studies and chapel services we will rejoice in the constancy of Christ and the assurance that we don’t have to wait for the end of the cliff-hanger because we already know where we’re headed. We look forward to seeing you this summer.
